The Laboratory for Smart and Bioinspired Materials held activities for new-student orientation, safety education, and graduate experience sharing

To help students newly joining the laboratory become familiar with the research environment, integrate into the laboratory community, and strengthen laboratory safety awareness, while giving full play to the exemplary and leading role of outstanding graduates,on September 10, the Laboratory for Smart and Bioinspired Materials organized activities for new-student orientation, laboratory safety education and training, and graduate experience sharing. Professor L and Professor J attended the event, and all laboratory students participated.
At the beginning of the event, the laboratory extended a warm welcome to the newly joined students Xuanran Luo, Yikun Wang, Wenzhuo Zhang, Huaining Xiong, and Bingying Xiao and others. The new students gave self-introductions in turn, sharing their basic personal information, study experience, research interests, and future plans. The relaxed and harmonious atmosphere enhanced mutual understanding between new and existing students, and helped the newcomers better understand the laboratory's research directions, team atmosphere, and daily work patterns, laying a good foundation for their subsequent study and research life.
Subsequently, senior fellow student Di Wu gave new-student safety education and training on laboratory safety and regulations. Combining the actual situation of the laboratory, the training systematically introduced the laboratory environment and functional areas, daily management regulations, precautions for experimental operations, and experimental safety, with emphasis on the importance of standardized operation and risk prevention during experiments. Through this training, the new students further strengthened their sense of safety responsibility and gained a more comprehensive understanding of the laboratory's basic management requirements and research experiment regulations. Professor Yanfeng Luo and Associate Professor Xuemei Jiang, in light of the actual research work of the laboratory, put forward further requirements for safety management and standardized experiments, emphasizing that laboratory safety is an important foundation for the smooth progress of research work, and expressing the hope that students will always maintain safety awareness throughout their experiments in future study and research.
In the graduate experience-sharing session, PhD graduates of the laboratory senior fellow student Weilong Xu and senior fellow student Lu Zhang shared valuable experience based on their own study, research, and growth in the laboratory. The two graduates exchanged views on research planning, experimental work, paper writing, time management, and personal growth during the PhD stage, and shared their thoughts and reflections when facing experimental difficulties, research pressure, and stage-specific challenges, providing useful reference and inspiration for new students on how to plan their graduate study and research life, and for current laboratory students on how to further clarify their research goals and improve their research capabilities.
During the exchange, students had full discussions on research and study, laboratory life, and future development. Professor Yanfeng Luo and Associate Professor Xuemei Jiang also exchanged views with students based on their own research and talent-cultivation experience, and expressed expectations for the newly joined students, hoping that they would complete their role transition as soon as possible, maintain curiosity about scientific questions and a spirit of exploration, strengthen exchange and cooperation on the basis of standardized and safe experiments, and gradually develop the ability to think independently and solve scientific problems.
This activity was both a warm welcome meeting for new laboratory members and an activity for research safety education and team-culture inheritance. The addition of new members injected new vitality into the laboratory, and the experience sharing by graduates continued the laboratory's fine atmosphere of mutual help and common growth. In the future, the Laboratory for Smart and Bioinspired Materials will continue to create a safe, standardized, open, and collaborative research environment, promote exchange and cooperation between faculty and students as well as between new and existing members, and jointly push the laboratory's research work to new progress.
